Heaven on Earth

3:00pm November 3, 2013 Old South Church

Liszt: Pater Noster from Christus
Veljo Tormis: Autumn Landscapes (selections) (1964)
Tchaikovsky: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Nos. 13 and 14
Vaughan Williams: Lord, thou hast been our refuge
Eric Whitacre: Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine (2001)
Gerald Finzi: Lo, the full, final sacrifice

Jamie Kirsch’s first season begins with brilliant choral works aspiring to the heavens, perfectly suited to the resonant space of Old South Church and its magnificent Skinner organ. The chorus reaches for transcendence with anthems, hymns, and prayers, evokes earthly beauty with Estonia’s Veljo Tormis—considered one of the greatest living choral composers—and, with Eric Whitacre, imagines Leonardo da Vinci’s quest to soar into the skies.
