Mezzo-soprano Sara Bielanski is quickly becoming a tour-de-force on the Boston classical music scene. Winner of the 2008 Boston NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Competition in the Professional Division, Ms. Bielanski has collaborated with Opera Boston, Chorus Pro Musica, Fine Arts Chorale, New England Light Opera, Valley Light Opera, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, Boston Pops Chorus, and has appeared as soloist with orchestra at many area universities and churches. Full opera roles performed include Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Sherry in Salvatore Macchia’s atonal opera Insectaphobia!, and the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas.
As an oratorio artist, she has appeared as soloist most notably in Mozart’s Requiem and Missa Brevis in F, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat and Missa Brevis in A, and has performed Stravinsky’s Cantata during Longy School of Music’s SeptemberFest series.
Ms. Bielanski is also a devout fan of new music, having received a Master of Vocal Performance in Modern American Music from the Longy School of Music, which allowed her the unique opportunity to pursue the classical and jazz idioms simultaneously. She has collaborated with many emerging area composers, including Dr. Delvin Case, Matthew Abidh Waugh, Liam Wade, Tor Somlo, Matthew Whittall, Heather Gilligan, Justin Cansinghino, and Vartan Agahabian.
Recording projects have included a choral demo of opera excerpts with BOSE, and a Bob Dylan recording project with WICN radio. Ms. Bielanski is a founding member of the Boston-based classical improvisation group, The Meltdown Incentive, which performs frequently at area schools and galleries. This fall, Ms. Bielanski will give the world premiere performance of Stephen Jean’s Song Cycle Cells.
