Chorus pro Musica will perform the following works as part of its next subscription season. More details will be provided as they become available. Please direct questions to us via email or call 617-267-7442.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2006 AT 8 PM
OLD SOUTH CHURCH, COPLEY SQUARE, BOSTON
(Program changed from original announcement)
Swiss composer Frank Martin's intensely personal Mass has been a favorite since its premiere in 1963, forty years after its composition. Polish composer Henryk Górecki is well known as an innovative and deeply spiritual artist. Miserere was composed in 1981 and dedicated to the workers of the then-clandestine trade union Solidarity; it was not allowed to be performed until 1987. The program also includes two beautiful settings by the English composer Herbert Murrill, who died in 1952 at age 43.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2006 AT 8 PM
OLD SOUTH CHURCH, COPLEY SQUARE, BOSTON
A uniquely English expression of the spirit of Christmas with sacred music and beloved carols. Britten's Ceremony of Carols, sung by the women of the chorus, exhibits a glorious variety of sonorities ranging from plangent solos to smooth choral polyphony. “Britten created sonorities that, though reassuringly familiar now, were unprecedented.” (Donald Teeters, Boston Cecilia).
FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2007, AT 8 PM
CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ST. PAUL, 138 TREMONT ST, BOSTON
Highly emotional and powerfully meditative, Bach's St. John Passion is a moving, thought-provoking work. It will be performed two weeks before Easter, with a period-instrument orchestra. (Scholarly notes by Michael Steinberg are at http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Articles/SJP-Steinberg.htm.)
SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2007, AT 3 PM
NEC'S JORDAN HALL, BOSTON
So exuberant, so dramatic, so poignant, and so lyrical, these two classic operas helped shape verismo, the quest for realism in late 19th century Italian opera. Concert performance in Italian with projected English translations. Chorus pro Musica last performed these operas together under Music Director Jeffrey Rink in 1997.
Two good starting-point web sites: OperaResource and Amato Opera.
DECEMBER 10, 2006, AT 8 PM

with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Federico Cortese, Music Director
